Honk if you love fall

geese

My favorite season in New England has arrived! And why do I love fall? Well, first of all, I hate the summer heat, so it’s nice not to be laying around the house trying to breathe (my mamas were too cheap to invest in central air conditioning, so some summer days can be pretty challenging for me). I also love the changing of the leaves, when they turn from green to my favorite color — why of course, it’s orange!

But most of all, I love to watch and listen to the migrating Canada geese. We live next to a cornfield that apparently is the equivalent of JFK Airport for the geese. I just love to hear them honking, and I like to watch them fly in their trademark “V” formation.

It’s too bad that so many humans, particularly golfers and pilots, regard the geese as a nuisance. Did you know that they fly in that formation so that the lead goose reduces the wind resistance for the others, and that they trade positions, so that no one goose becomes overly tired? Amazing stuff! If only humans could learn to cooperate with one another so well.

  1. Dear Mr. Oxbow, what a wonderful and thoughtful blog entry today! Love the title of the blog entry title as well. Mr. Oxbow, you are becoming more clever and creative with each entry. You are wise beyond your years. Humans really need to pay attention to Mother Nature in all its forms, such as geese flying in formation.
We are all dependent on one another, and the “selfie” generation will have some hard times ahead if they think they can go it alone. Mother Nature has delivered some powerful natural events to bring some humility to the arrogant two-legged kind. Man-made disasters and tragedies are also in the category of arrogance. Sad, very very sad–we MUST come up with some kind of solution to gun violence and opioid addiction in this country.
Mr. Oxbow…do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

  2. Thanks for your kind words, Babs. I don’t know what the answer is to what’s going on with humans. There is plenty of violence in the animal world, too, but usually it has to do with hunger, not sport or psychosis. Though I must confess, I have occasionally batted around some innocent insects until they’ve met their demise. I’m ashamed. I do think cooperation is the answer to most problems, but of course it’s hard to achieve cooperation among people and animals that may have very different goals.
